High Tatras, Slovakia
Overview & Getting There
The High Tatras, Slovakia's dramatic alpine range, are famous for their jagged peaks and many glacial lakes. They're ideal for hiking and photography, offering something for both adventure seekers and those looking for some peace and quiet.
Getting there:
- train - the Tatra electric railway (locally knows as 'zubačka') connects towns like Poprad, Starý Smokovec, and Štrbské Pleso, making it easy to access trailheads without a car
- car - flexible, especially if you plan to hike remote valleys, but parking can be limited in peak season
- bus - regional buses will take you to most trailheads, but they can be scarce

The Prielom mountain pass
Most picturesque hikes
- Priečne sedlo: One of the most challenging full day hikes through a famous mountain ridge. Includes chains, footholds, vertical walls, views of glacial lakes.
- Sedlo Prielom: Another ridge trail which is equally as challenging. You will pass through Zamrznutý kotol ('the frozen cirque'), one of the coldest places in High Tatras.
- Kriváň: Slovakia's most iconic peak is not it's highest mountain (Gerlach), it's Kriváň. The challenging climb will reward you with legendary views over the Tatras and Liptov region.
- Bystrá Lávka: Another scenic ridge trail through with two glacial lakes and a waterfall on the way.
- Hincovo Pleso: A hike to the deepest and darkest glacial lake in the High Tatras. If you feel like it, it's possible to summit Kôprovský štít. Just like with all these recommended hikes, you do not need a special permit or a guide.
Where to Stay / Practical Tips
Instead of staying directly in Starý Smokovec or Štrbské pleso, look for budget-friendly villages. If your hike starts from Smokovec, consider staying in Nová Lesná or Vyšný Slavkov for more affordable options. If you hike starts in Štrbské Pleso, choose a guesthouse in Štrba.
Bring layers: weather changes fast in the mountains. It's recommended that you start hiking as early as possible to avoid crowds, especially on Kriváň.

Where to Get 35mm Film
Dedicated film shops are rare in the High Tatras. Your best option is to stock up in a bigger city like Poprad before heading into the mountains. Alternatively, you can order film online and have it shipped to a local delivery box.
